“Are you an angel?” August 31, 2007

Guess how many times I hear that!? :o )

I have to say, it is a good ice breaker and has led to many an interesting conversation. I have had the privalage of sharing my faith with many who asked me this question then stayed to listen to why I am an angel. I have also had the misfortune of having some try to persuade me to consider exploring my ‘dark’ side, as they call it! However … I always try, probably to the annoyance of those interested in an angel’s ‘dark’ side, to share why I will not go down that road. That is not what SL is about for me … many may choose that path, but not this angel!

Now, I know that SL is very much about escapism and fantasy fulfillment for many, and, yes, I can see the appeal of that. But I fail to see, in the long run, how this can maintain the sense of fulfillment that must be there at the beginning. I would rather be ‘real’ in SL … if that makes sense … and the only way I can do that is to be true to my inner self, which belongs, first and foremost, to God, then to my RL counterpart. With me so far? Good … cos I may have lost my thread!

Anyhoo …. I was shopping the other day, and happened to TP into a marina where I hoped to visit an antiques shop for kitchen units! The lag was dreadful, and a gentleman struck up conversation with the phrase that I am becoming oh, so used to! He was polite and seemed interested in what I had to share, challenging me intelligently on one or two points. Then he just had to go and spoil it with the ‘Do you have a dark angel side?’ Yaaaaaaaaawwwwwwwwwwwwnnnnnnnn! Like I haven’t heard that one before either! And for the next 5 minutes I listened to innuendo afterinnuendo about the enjoyment of exploring that side! Then I politely excused myself … only to have said gentleman TP elsewhere before I could find the landmark I wanted to visit!

Why? That’s what I want to know? Why do folk think it’s amusing or witty to go down that road? Do I think it appropriate to ask a vampire if they explore their ‘light’ side? Do I think it’s witty to ask the dominatrix if she has explored her ‘good’ side? No … I would not be so presumptuous or rude! And would probably have TP’d elsewhere anywhere unless the vampire or dominatrix had intelligent conversation to make with me!

My RL counterpart tells me she has come up against this too with people around her trying to provoke or persuade  her into doing or saying something she would be ashamed of or embarrassed by …. and she has learned that it is not worth giving in!

Anyway …. such is life, I suppose, Real or Second!

Ishbel and I have been so busy working on our respective homes, that we haven’t visited many places of interest together lately! Though I suppose if you are really into shopping then shops are places of interest!

Ishbel always manages to find the most interesting places … an indication of what a talented researcher she is! So it was at her suggestion that we ended up swimming (well, scuba diving without the scuba!) the coral reef at Freya (I must remember to try and take proper notes of landmarks!). Ishbel kindly gave me a bikini …. there wasn’t much to it!!!

The reef was beautiful, though hard work to swim through, and we kept losing each other.

Swimming at the coral reef

Then Ishbel spotted the balloon …. well, who can resist a free balloon ride?!

Admiring the scenery

After a couple of false starts, we got the balloon going and were soon soring over beautiful beach, mountain and coastal scenery, both of us snapping away like mad. Then Ishbel’s computer crashed … I assured her I would keep taking snaps – although her RL counterpart wasn’t inline, Ishbel was still opposite me in the balloon!

It was when the balloon went through a mountain that I first suspected something had gone wrong! Next thing I knew we were drifting out to sea …. and getting lower! Snapping away furiously, my RL counterpart wondering if she should shut down, I wanted to keep going to see where we ended up!

Slipping below the waves

Inevitably, we ditched in the sea …. balloons don’t float on the ocean in SL! I could only watch with dismay as the balloon sunk lower and lower below the ocean surface! Reminded me of one of the scenes in “Titanic”! It was then that I decided I’d better TP home …. to discover TP wasn’t working! In the end my RL counterpart had to shut down!

Ever get that sinking feeling?!

When I got back online, I TP’d to Ishbel’s, who was now sporting a rather fetching pirate outfit and eye patch. Needless to say, we took it easy for the rest of the evening. But already I’m looking forward to the next trip Ishbel organises!

Recovering from the balloon ride!

It had been a beautiful trip though, a change from shopping, building, moving furniture and landscaping!

At least, I have a feeling that this is the way it is going to be!

As of 2nd August 2007, following a successful trial, SL became voice enabled.  I have to confess, that I haven’t had much experience of it, apart from after church 2 weeks ago when the preacher, Ewen, and 2 of the other guys in the congregation switched to voice, and entertained us all for half an hour by taking the rip out of each other … and of me when I confessed what a huge Dr Who fan I am!

So, today, I was happily wandering around looking for living room furniture, when I happened upon a barn owned by Turkey Yip, who designs and makes furniture and kitchen. He was using voice, despite his neighbours having ‘orbitted’ him and messed up things on his site, so I decided to try talking to him. The good news was that he could hear me clearly … the bad news was that he couldn’t understand me because of my accent!!! I knew this would happen! Hey-ho!

We switched back to text, and he spent the next 30-40 minutes rezzing examples of his furniture for me! I went away a happy shopper having bought a full living room set for my home! I would highly recommend Turkey’s barn – it was the best customer service I’ve seen yet in SL!

Now I’m off to arrange my living room and find a rug that matches!

There I was, enjoying finding me feet (or wings) in Second Life …. making new friends … learning who and where to avoid.

One evening I got an Instant Message (IM) from a Ms J Babii, who said she had seen me at church and, when I checked, sure enough was a member of a couple of Christian groups I was in. She invited me to TP to her location, which turned out to be a rather raunchy looking studio flat … belonging, she said, to a friend of hers. We chatted about church … about being a Christian in RL and SL … and, all the time, she kept popping in and out to ‘check something’. Then the conversation took a turn for the more uncomfortable, as she shared that she had found herself led into temptations in SL that she should not be partaking in … to cut the story short, I politely declined her ‘invitation’ at which point she took great offense and told me to take FLIGHT. I was catapulted to the skies, and seemed to be having a fit, from which I could not recover, nor could I TP to any of my landmarks. I was already flustered, but by now I was just plain freaked! I couldn’t even log out and in the end my counterpart had to turn the computer off.

I must have sat for about half an hour, calming myself, before plucking up the courage to go back in. To my delight and surprise I was back at the place I’d happily been exploring before the awful experience I’d just been subjected to! Unsure as to whether or not she had control over my movements in some way, I thought about how to proceed … and, just at that moment, Sonic came in-world. I sought him out and explained what had happened … and was relieved, though horrified, to learn that I was not the only one in the group to have been subjected to similar abuses. Feeling reassured, I raised a prayer for the disturbed individual, and IM’d some Scripture verses (not surprisingly she was offline!). But angered that she was preying on people in such a way, I filled out a complaint form to Linden Labs.

Weeks later I received email to say that the matter had been dealt with, but with no indication as to any action that was taken. Imagine my shock when, just days later, I was sitting in church, and she TP’d in and sat in another area of the church! Tempted though I was to TP out of there, I sat tight and was relieved that she left the moment the service was over. A very strange, lost individual, methinks.

There is a saying -

Thorns and stings
And those such things
Just make stronger
Our angel wings.

I have always believed that the difficult things we face in life, whether that be RL or SL, are there for a reason, and are often a test of one’s inner self and motives. Oft times angels face difficulties, and can even be faced with a head on fight with evil. Unfortunately evil happily uses and abuses those who are weak in resolve and / or spirit to carry out evil deeds. Victim and abuser are both left traumatised. I have been blessed with true friendship and fellowship in SL, and that is what I held onto throughout and especially in the aftermath of the experience with Ms Babii. It is my hope and prayer that the inner Light of God which sustains me shone throughout, and continues to do so, and that it is no longer an angel form that is seen, but the Light and Love of our Heavenly Father.

The joy of friendship

I was born on the 24th January 2007 …. that is to say that I joined the every increasing community that is Second Life on that date.

Second Life (SL) is a “3D online digital world, created and owned by its residents”, which may be true to an extent, but it is ultimately owned by Linden Lab, in San Fransisco. which was founded by Philip Rosedale in 1999, with a view to creating a 3D world where individuals can socialise, build, communicate and, basically, live.

My first few ventures in SL bored me, quite frankly! I just could not get the hang of it! Little did I realise what was ahead of me!

So I lay dormant for a few months – then was revived when a Real Life (RL) friend mentioned in passing that she was in SL. So back I went! That first day I wandered aimlessly, wondering what to do and where to go. A very nice chap offered to show me around … which he did … but it just wasn’t the kind of place I like to be shown around, thank you very much! ‘Nuff said! That is when I discovered the joys of Teleporting (TP) and TP’d my scared little butt out of there!

Aaarrrggghhh!

Sitting on a beautiful beach, enjoying the sounds of the waves crashing, and the campfire crackling ….

My next wander was more productive! I found a lovely beach called Eternal Creations. I got chatting to a gentleman called Sonic Rang, who really did turn out to be a gentleman. He even took me to a shop and helped me choose some ‘real’ hair …. and after some more advice from him, I soon found my wings and some decent clothes! He also took me to a church service at SDG Northbound Community Church, where he introduced me to the pastor, Ewen Glenelg, and worship leader, Davide Paravane. This place was to become my ‘home’ church.

During this time I had some delightful evenings at Nessie’s Bar with my RL (now SL) friends, Ishbel Hartmann, Equso Shepherd, Menolly Larrson, Norma Demina and flickr Raymaker. Together we explored interesting …. and not so interesting places!

One of many bars that we found!

Then came the event that nearly put me off SL for life …. but that is for another time!
